Spiritual Tourism & The Journey

The 80 km drive from Srinagar to Sonamarg follows the course of the Sindh River and holds massive religious significance.

Baltal: Amarnath Yatra Base

Located 15 km past Sonamarg, Baltal serves as the most direct and popular base camp for the holy Amarnath Yatra.

Unlike the longer Pahalgam route, the Baltal route is much shorter (14 km trek) but significantly steeper. During July and August, Baltal transforms into a massive city of tents and free langars catering to millions of Lord Shiva devotees. It is also the primary helipad for Amarnath helicopter services.

Mata Kheer Bhawani Temple

Located in Tulmulla (Ganderbal), slightly off the Sonamarg highway. This is the most sacred Hindu temple for Kashmiri Pandits. Built over a mystical spring whose water is believed to change color predicting the future.

Manasbal Lake (Detour)

Known as the deepest lake in Kashmir and a bird watcher's paradise. A short detour from the Sonamarg highway brings you here. In July/August, the edges of the lake are covered in thousands of blooming pink lotus flowers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sonamarg

Can my Srinagar Taxi take me to Zoji La Pass and Zero Point?
Absolutely NOT. Similar to Pahalgam, outside taxis (including from Srinagar) are banned by the local Sonamarg Taxi Union from traveling to Zoji La Pass, Zero Point, and Baltal. Your Srinagar taxi will drop you at the Sonamarg taxi stand. From there, you must negotiate and hire a local union 4x4 cab to cross the pass.
Is Sonamarg open for tourists in Winter (Dec to March)?
Historically, Sonamarg was completely cut off during winter due to massive avalanches on the Gagangir route. However, recently, the government has been trying to keep the road open till Sonamarg main town (often requiring chained vehicles). Zoji La Pass and Zero Point remain strictly closed during winter months.
Do I need a pony for Thajiwas Glacier?
It is not mandatory. The distance from the main market to the base of the glacier is about 3 to 4 km. If you are reasonably fit, it is a very pleasant, scenic 1.5-hour hike. If you are traveling with elderly people or young children, hiring a pony from the designated union stand is highly recommended.
Are there timing restrictions for crossing Zoji La Pass?
Yes. The Zoji La pass is a one-way traffic system on most days due to the narrow road width. Traffic going up from Sonamarg to Kargil/Zero Point is usually allowed only during specific morning hours, and return traffic is allowed in the afternoon. Always start your trip to Zero Point early in the morning.
