Welcome to Sonamarg, a mesmerizing alpine valley situated at an altitude of 9,186 feet in the Ganderbal district. Literally translating to "The Meadow of Gold," Sonamarg is the true gateway to the cold desert of Ladakh and is surrounded by majestic glaciers and the roaring, icy waters of the Sindh River.
Unlike any other destination in Kashmir, Sonamarg offers a rugged, raw mountainous terrain. It is the undisputed base camp for the legendary Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, the gateway to the treacherous Zoji La Pass, and a hub for white-water rafting. Dive into Dar Tour & Travels' ultimate, deep-dive guide to Sonamarg below.
Experience snow in the middle of summer and cross one of the most thrilling mountain passes in the world.
Located just 3 km from the main Sonamarg market, Thajiwas Glacier is the primary attraction of the valley. Overlooked by the Thajiwas mountain, this glacier remains covered in snow almost throughout the year.
At a staggering altitude of 11,575 feet, Zoji La is a high mountain pass providing the vital link between Kashmir and Ladakh. Just beyond the pass lies Zero Point, a stark, breathtaking landscape famous for deep snow.
Sonamarg is the official starting point for India's most beautiful alpine trek. Discover the turquoise lakes hidden deep in the Himalayas.
The Lake of Vishnu
Situated at 12,011 feet, this is the first major lake on the KGL trek. Surrounded by lush green meadows and overlooked by jagged peaks. The water is crystal clear and famous for its brown trout. It requires crossing the grueling Nichinai Pass.
The Lake of Krishna
Located just under a kilometer above Vishansar Lake, at 12,500 feet. The trek to this lake offers incredible, postcard-perfect reflections of the surrounding snow-capped mountains on its placid, deep blue surface.
At the Foot of Harmukh
Towards the end of the KGL trek, these twin lakes sit spectacularly at the foot of Mount Harmukh (the Eiger of Kashmir). Gangabal is deeply sacred to Kashmiri Pandits, who perform annual pilgrimages here.
Dar Tour & Travels provides full 7-day KGL trekking expeditions starting from Sonamarg, including expert guides, cooks, permits, and ponies.
The 80 km drive from Srinagar to Sonamarg follows the course of the Sindh River and holds massive religious significance.
Located 15 km past Sonamarg, Baltal serves as the most direct and popular base camp for the holy Amarnath Yatra.
Unlike the longer Pahalgam route, the Baltal route is much shorter (14 km trek) but significantly steeper. During July and August, Baltal transforms into a massive city of tents and free langars catering to millions of Lord Shiva devotees. It is also the primary helipad for Amarnath helicopter services.
Located in Tulmulla (Ganderbal), slightly off the Sonamarg highway. This is the most sacred Hindu temple for Kashmiri Pandits. Built over a mystical spring whose water is believed to change color predicting the future.
Known as the deepest lake in Kashmir and a bird watcher's paradise. A short detour from the Sonamarg highway brings you here. In July/August, the edges of the lake are covered in thousands of blooming pink lotus flowers.
The icy rapids of the Sindh River and the rugged terrain make Sonamarg a hub for extreme sports.
The Sindh River offers some of the best white-water rafting in Kashmir, ranging from Grade II to Grade IV rapids. The main starting point is usually Shutkari Bridge, providing thrilling rides against the backdrop of snowy peaks.
The icy, fast-flowing waters of the Sindh River are teeming with Brown and Rainbow Trout. Vishansar Lake and the upper reaches of the river are prime spots for angling. A permit from the Fisheries Department is required.
Instead of staying in a concrete hotel, opt for luxury Swiss tents pitched right on the banks of the Sindh River. Wake up to the sound of gushing water, surrounded by dense pine forests and the fresh alpine breeze.
If the 7-day KGL trek is too long, you can do brilliant 1-day hikes from Sonamarg. The trek up to Thajiwas Glacier or the trek to the pristine Nichinai Pass offers incredible scenery without the need for overnight camping.
Exclusive itineraries focused entirely on the Meadow of Gold, perfect for adventure seekers and mountain lovers.
