Heaven on Earth

The Meadow of Flowers

Gulmarg: India's Premier Winter Wonderland

Welcome to Gulmarg, a legendary cup-shaped valley situated at an altitude of 8,690 feet in the Pir Panjal Range. Originally named 'Gaurimarg' by shepherds, it was renamed 'Gulmarg' (Meadow of Flowers) in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah.

Today, it stands as the undisputed winter sports capital of India, boasting the world's second-highest operating cable car, powdery snow that rivals the Swiss Alps, and the highest 18-hole golf course in the world. Whether you are seeking extreme alpine skiing or a romantic honeymoon amidst the pines, explore Dar Tour & Travels' ultimate guide to Gulmarg below.

The Gulmarg Gondola

The defining experience of any Kashmir trip. Ascend into the clouds on one of the highest cable cars on the planet.

Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 Kongdoori

Phase 1: Kongdoori

The Forest Canopy Ride

Starting from the Gulmarg resort, the first stage takes you on a breathtaking 10-minute ride over towering pine and fir forests to the bowl-shaped Kongdoori station (8,530 ft).

  • Activities: Kongdoori is a massive plateau. In winter, it's perfect for beginner skiing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In summer, enjoy ATV rides and horse riding.
  • Dining: Relax at the high-altitude restaurants here, sipping traditional Kashmiri Kahwa or hot Maggi while overlooking the spectacular valley below.
Apharwat Peak Gulmarg Snow

Phase 2: Apharwat Peak

Touching the Sky

The second stage is not for the faint-hearted. It lifts you out of the tree line and into the stark, breathtaking alpine zone, culminating near the summit of Apharwat Peak at a staggering 13,058 feet.

  • Panoramic Views: On a clear day, you can see the mighty Nanga Parbat (the 9th highest mountain in the world) and the Line of Control (LoC).
  • Extreme Skiing: This is where professional freeriders and heli-skiers come for untouched, deep powder snow, widely considered the best in Asia.
Alpather Lake Frozen

Alpather Lake

The Frozen Lake

Also known as the 'Frozen Lake', Alpather Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake situated at the foot of the twin Apharwat Peaks. It remains completely frozen from November until mid-June.

  • The Trek: Reaching the lake requires a rugged 1.5 km trek or a pony ride starting from the Phase 2 Gondola station. The terrain is rocky but the vibrant turquoise water (in summer) or vast icy expanse (in winter) is deeply rewarding.

The Adventure Capital

From learning the basics of skiing to dropping out of helicopters onto virgin snow peaks, Gulmarg caters to all adrenaline levels.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Gulmarg offers over 1,300 meters of vertical descent. Beginners can take lessons on the gentle 'Baby Slopes' near the golf course, while pros tackle the epic Apharwat bowls. Dar Tour & Travels provides equipment rental and certified instructors.

Heli-Skiing

Gulmarg is the only destination in India offering true Heli-Skiing. Helicopters drop expert skiers onto untouched, towering peaks in the Pir Panjal range for an ultimate, adrenaline-pumping descent through pristine powder.

Snowmobiling & ATVs

For non-skiers, the thrill continues. Rent high-powered snowmobiles (sledges) to speed across the massive Kongdoori plateau in winter, or ride rugged ATVs through the muddy, pine-scented forest trails during the summer months.

IIS&M Courses

Gulmarg is home to the prestigious Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IIS&M). They offer highly sought-after 14-day certificate courses in skiing, snowboarding, and mountaineering. Dar Tours can assist with enrollment information.

Heritage & Peaceful Meadows

Beyond the snow, Gulmarg holds a rich history of royal temples, British-era churches, and deeply revered Sufi shrines.

Maharani Temple (Shiv Temple)

Sitting prominently on a small hillock right in the middle of Gulmarg, this temple was built in 1915 by Queen Mohini Bai Sisodia, wife of the erstwhile Maharaja Hari Singh. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati, it gained pop-culture fame after the hit Bollywood song "Jai Jai Shiv Shankar" was filmed here.

St. Mary's Church

A stunning piece of Victorian architecture dating back to 1902. Constructed of grey stone with a green-tiled roof, it stands beautifully solitary in the meadow, surrounded by pine trees. In winter, when covered entirely in snow, it looks like a scene straight out of a Christmas postcard.

Ziyarat Baba Reshi

Located about 5 km down from Gulmarg, this highly revered shrine is the tomb of the 15th-century Sufi saint, Baba Payam-Uddin (Baba Reshi). The shrine is built with stunning traditional Kashmiri woodwork and latticework. Devotees of all faiths visit here to seek blessings and tie sacred threads.

Khilanmarg Meadow

A 6 km uphill trek or pony ride from the Gulmarg bus stand. Khilanmarg is a small, quiet valley adorned with spring flowers. It offers the most spectacular, unobstructed panoramic view of the massive Nanga Parbat and the twin peaks of Nun and Kun.

Strawberry Valley

A pristine, lesser-known part of Gulmarg. During the summer, this area is bursting with fresh, wild red strawberries. You can walk or take a pony here, pick fresh strawberries directly from the fields, and enjoy a quiet picnic away from the Gondola crowds.

The Journey: Srinagar to Gulmarg

The 50 km drive takes you through the beautiful town of Tangmarg, known as the gateway to Gulmarg, featuring stunning detours and frozen waterfalls.

Drung Frozen Waterfall Kashmir

Tangmarg & The Chain Taxis

Tangmarg is a bustling town located 13 km before Gulmarg. The road from here to Gulmarg is a steep, winding ascent through pine forests. Crucial Winter Tip: During heavy snowfall (Dec-Feb), normal vehicles cannot climb this road. At Tangmarg, tourists must shift into special 4x4 vehicles fitted with anti-skid tire chains to safely reach Gulmarg.

Drung Frozen Waterfall

A short, rugged 3 km detour from Tangmarg takes you to the village of Drung. It has recently exploded in popularity because of its massive waterfall. While beautiful in summer, it becomes a major tourist attraction in winter when the entire cascading waterfall freezes solid into massive, majestic icicles, creating a magical photo opportunity.

Botapathri (Hidden Valley)

Located about 10 km from Gulmarg, Botapathri is a highly restricted, incredibly pristine meadow very close to the Line of Control. Recently opened to tourists (with permission), it offers completely untouched nature, gushing streams, and zero commercialization.

Summer Leisure

Highest Golf Course in the World

During the summer months, Gulmarg sheds its snowy blanket to reveal a lush, incredibly green landscape. Right in the center lies the magnificent Gulmarg Golf Course.

Situated at 8,700 feet, this is the highest 18-hole green golf course in the world. Originally started by the British in 1911, it has been redesigned to international standards. The course is surrounded by vibrant wildflowers and towering pines. You can rent clubs locally and enjoy a round in the crisp alpine air.

Children's Park

If traveling with kids, the adjacent Gulmarg Children's Park is beautifully maintained with rides, a small artificial lake with paddle boats, and plenty of space for family picnics.

Frequently Asked Questions about Gulmarg

How and when should I book Gulmarg Gondola tickets?
Book Online, Months in Advance! This is critical. Gondola tickets are sold strictly online via the official J&K Cable Car Corporation website. During peak seasons (Winter and Summer), tickets sell out 1 to 2 months in advance. Dar Tour & Travels strongly advises booking your gondola tickets the moment you finalize your travel dates.
Do I need heavy winter clothing, and can I rent it there?
If you are visiting in Winter or planning to go to Phase 2 (Apharwat Peak) any time of the year, you absolutely need heavy snow jackets, pants, and snow boots. Yes, you can rent them. Tangmarg has massive rental shops where you can hire high-quality snow suits and gumboots for the day at very reasonable prices before heading up to Gulmarg.
Can my Srinagar Taxi take me directly to my Gulmarg Hotel in Winter?
In summer, yes. In Winter (during heavy snow), NO. Standard vehicles cannot grip the steep snowy roads from Tangmarg to Gulmarg. Your Srinagar taxi will drop you at the Tangmarg taxi stand (13 km before Gulmarg). From there, you must hire a local 4x4 Jeep (Sumo/Tavera) fitted with anti-skid iron chains to reach your Gulmarg hotel safely.
What is the difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Gondola?
Phase 1 (Kongdoori): Takes you to a massive plateau at 8,500 ft. Great for families, food, ATV rides, and basic snow games.

Phase 2 (Apharwat): Takes you near the mountain peak at 13,000+ ft. Much colder, thinner air, panoramic Himalayan views, and deep snow. It is required if you want to trek to Alpather Lake or do advanced skiing.
